They called Evil by its real name
This morning, the Roanoke Times chose to run a photo of Pope John Paul II with one of their favorite presidents -- Jimmy Carter (who I voted for in 1976). The photo reminded me of the days I grew up watching the failures of Presidents Johnson, Nixon, and Carter, and how I worried that the tide of history might be flowing against freedom. From my post with the Peace Corps in Africa, I watched as the Soviet Union and it's Cuban proxies invaded Nicaragua, Ethiopia, Angola, and Afghanistan. Jimmy Carter basically told the American people they were beginning to pay for their sins and that they had best just sit back and do penance. Yes, "malaise" was a good word for the zeitgeist.
Then giants stood up.
